Abstract

1535256 Electrolytic antifouling of seawater DIAMOND SHAMROCK CORP 23 April 1976 [25 April 1975] 16636/76 Heading C7B A seawater intake e.g. for an electrolysis cell or on a ship, has a conduit 3 covered at its inlet by an electro-catalytically active anodic screen 1. A cathode 4 is arranged at such a distance from the anode as to prevent deposits forming on the cathode from clogging the anode. In Fig. 1 this is achieved by the shape of the insulator 9, but may also be achieved by suitable spacing. An alternative cathode is a disc located below the anode. Conventional valve metal substrates with Pt and valve metal oxides as coating are disclosed as anode. As cathode, stainless steel, Ni (alloy) and Ti are disclosed; the cathode may be a ship's hull. Alternatively a sacrificial cathode may be used for also effecting cathodic protection. The conduit may be conductive or insulating. Insulation of plastics, concrete or ceramics is disclosed.
