Abstract

777,816. Preventing corrosion. DOW CHEMICAL CO. March 16, 1955 [May 19, 1957], No. 8024/56. Divided out of 777,815 (Group XXII]. Class 123 (1). A consumable anode 10a for the cathodic protection of, for example, pipe lines, ships' tanks and hulls, water heaters or steam condensers is made of magnesium alloy and is of roughly rectangular cross-section with a flat face 44 which, in use abuts the surface to be protected, a flat steel strip core 30a being cast in the anode near its centre. Holes 46 for mounting the anode on stud bolts secured to the structure are drilled in the face 44 and through the core strip and enlarged counterbores 48 are drilled coaxially with the holes 46 from the opposite face of the anode as far as the core to house a washer and securing nut. The anode may be made in a continuous length by the direct chill casting process described in the original Specification whereby a metallurgical bond with good electrical contact and resistance to liquid seepage is secured between the core and the anodic material.
