Abstract

860,968. Protecting titanium surfaces against corrosion. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 16, 1958 [July 26, 1957 ; Nov. 25,1957; Dec. 4,1957], Nos. 23726/57,36619/57 and 37750/57. Class 41. The rate of corrosion of a structure of titanium or a titanium base alloy, e.g. with zirconium, in contact with a liquid medium corrosive thereto, for example sulphuric, orthophosphoric, hydrochloric, formic and oxalic acids, is reduced by electrically connecting the structure to a material which is more noble than the titanium or alloy and which is in contact with the liquid medium whereby there is maintained on the surface of the structure, by anodic polarization, a film protective against corrosion by the medium. The more noble material, for example graphite or platinum, may form a cathode immersed in the medium but separated from the structure to be protected to which it is connected by an external connection. A source of direct current, e.g. a battery, may be included in the external circuit to ensure that the structure potential is maintained at the required level. Alternatively the more noble material is placed in direct contact with the titanium surface to be protected. Thus platinum may be plated, spot-welded or sprayed on to the surface whilst a carbon layer may be deposited thereon by decomposition of carbon monoxide or dioxide or by carbonizing a coating of oil. Both platinum and carbon in powdered form may be rolled into the surface.
