Supplying current to moving and rotating conductors; plug couplings.-A winding and paying- out drum 4, Fig. 1, for kite balloons &c. is mounted in watertight manner upon a stationary hollow spindle 5, and is provided with means to maintain electrical connexion between the inner core and outer sheath respectively of the cable and the two branches of an outside telephone or like circuit. A metal slip ring 9 is attached by screws 10 to an insulating annulus 11 secured internally by brackets 13 to the drum 4. Contact is maintained with a spring-pressed brush 16 carried by a stationary arm 19 on the spindle 5 and connected by an insulated lead 22 to a doubleended terminal 25 secured bv a coupling nut 27 and packing 28 and leading through the conduit 20 to one branch of the telephone circuit. The slip ring 9 is connected by an insulated lead 31 clamped by a nut 33 to a split socket 34 screwed into a two-part insulation block 35 which is secured in the wall 36 of the drum. The cable passing through a hole in the hub 12 of the drum terminates in a connexion, shown in Fig. 3. The outer sheath of the cable, passing through a packing gland 46, is splayed and gripped between conical members 47, 48, the core passing through a second packing-gland 49 and a tubular elbow connexion 50 leading to a terminal plug 52, m the split end of which the core is secured by a nut 51. The two-part insulation block 35 and the elbow 50 are secured in the wall 36 of the drum by screwed coupling sleeves 42, 43 with intermediate packing 44, 45. The metal sheathing of the cable is extended electrically through the elbow 50 and the metal work of the drum, and can be connected to the second branch of the telephone circuit at any convenient part of the winch frame.
