Abstract

534,985. Two-part couplings. PIRELLIGENERAL CABLE WORKS, Ltd., and SOPER, R. E. S. Nov. 23, 1939, No. 30650. [Class 38 (i)] A coupling for concentric cables for high frequency signalling systems having concentric coupling members 1, 11, and 1, 7 spaced apart by insulators 2, have the relative diameters of the outer and inner conductors varied where the solid insulators are placed to correct changes in impedance due to the change of di-electric constant. The insulators are thus located in recesses in the inner and outer conductors, by forming shoulders on the tapered parts 1a, 5, and employing ring nuts 3 and a shouldered plug member 11 and socket member 7. The outer conductors 1 bed together on a lead washer 19 and are enclosed in a cylinder 18, the parts being fastened together by bolts 17 and a flange 16 with laterally open slots 16a. The outer conductor wires 22 are bulged slightly where the sleeve 9 is situated and are bent to lie outside the extension 23 of the member 1, the internal diameters of the conductor 22 and extension 23 being the same. While soldering the joints a dummy insulator replaces the insulators 2 to avoid damage by heat as described in Specification 535,006. A pair of plug members 1, 11 attached to the ends of a length of flexible cable 12, 14 may be employed as a flexible coupling between two cables or devices fitted with socket members.
