Abstract

152,822. British Thomson - Houston Co., and Belsey, W. J. Aug. 16, 1919. Driving-arrangements for screw propellers.-Relates to a system of electric ship propulsion. The main turbine 1 is directly coupled to the main alternating-current generator 2 which drives a synchronous motor 5 mounted on the propeller shaft 4. Cooling-water is normally circulated through the condenser 15 by a circulating- pump 5 driven by an alternating- current motor 6 supplied from the main'generator 2. When the main generator is not in use, an auxiliary circulating-pump 8 is employed, driven by a motor 9 which is supplied by an auxiliary generator. A condensate pump 14 may be coupled to the pump 8 or may be separately driven from the same source as tne other auxiliaries. The withdrawal of the circulating-pump from the number of auxiliaries driven by the usual auxiliary turbine-driven direct-current generator reduces the consumption of steam to an amount which is still sufficient for heating the feed-water for the boilers.
