Abstract

1525241 Sampling COCKSEDGE & CO Ltd 11 Dec 1975 [31 Dec 1974] 56122/74 Heading B8N [Also in Divisions B3 and G3] Apparatus for controlling the operation of a sampling tool for extracting a sample of beet from a stack, comprises a piston and cylinder device 24 to advance and retract the tool 33, fluid supply and exhaust lines 70, 72 to the device and a switch 77 to detect a drop in exhaust pressure to stop the fluid supply and hence the tool advance. The switch 77, normally held open by the exhaust fluid pressure. When the tool meets a fixed object, e.g. the floor of a lorry containing the beet, its advance is prevented and the exhaust pressure drops to cause switch 77 to close and switch multi-port valve 79 over so that the tool is retracted. The tool 33 is rotatably mounted on a frame 17 which is vertically guided in a set of vertical guides 16 of a carriage 10 with wheels 11. Scoops 48 within the tool 33 are advanced and retracted relative to the tool by a hydraulic ram 44. The tool is guided against lateral movement by rollers (49), (50), Fig. 4 (not shown), in a framework (56-59) at the lower end of the carriage 10. The tool guide framework permits slight pivotal movement of the tool and may include shear pins.
