151,255. Wilcomb, J. F. April 12, 1919, [Convention date]. Overthrow guards for needles.-Slidable friction elements such as jacks 26 are provided in the slots of the needle carrier individual to the needles and are adapted to be struck thereby, near the end of the knitting stroke. The jacks 26 are taken up on a low angled cam 27x and by their resistance to the impact of the needles act as guards to restrain the needles from overshooting the lower point of the stitch cam. The tails 26<x> of the jacks are cramped to engage the walls of the needle slot and thus provide frictional resistance tb prevent the overtlirow of the needles. Wear due to impact of needles is spread over a large number of jacks instead of being concentrated on one part of a guard cam, and wear and upsetting effect on jacks and needles is automatically neutralized and compensated. The device may be used in conjunction with the improved knitting or crochet needle unit described in Specification 141,660.
