1501303 Transporting loads by cableway carriages JAMES JONES & SONS Ltd 8 June 1976 23689/76 Heading B7L In a cableway carriage, a load is carried on one end d of a haul-in line c passing around a capstan drum or pulley which has a brake drum 24 non-rotatably connected thereto, and a mechanism operates to tighten a band 25 around the drum 24 when the tension in the line c exceeds a certain value to thereby brake the drum 24 against anticlockwise rotation so that pulling on the line c moves the carriage along a cable a, b. With a haul-back line e tensioned, pulling on line c causes an arm 7 carrying a pulley 9 to pivot anticlockwise against the action of a spring 8 and, through linkage 23, 22, 21, 14, the band 25 is tightened. When the line c is pulled, the capstan drum can rotate clockwise and the load carried on the end d is lifted, but a fully suspended load tends to rotate the drum anticlockwise which is prevented by the brake. A second haul-in line f may aid paying- out of the line c.
