Abstract

1,069,660. Kicking straps. WIGGIN CHAINS Ltd. Feb. 10, 1966, No. 5796/66. Heading B7V. [Also in Division E2] A jamming cleat or jamming block device used in the rigging of sailing boats, e.g. as part of a kicking strap, comprises a supporting member carrying first and second fixedly located stops 23, 17 and a pivotally mounted two-armed lever 20 so arranged that one arm 22 of the lever can co-operate with the first stop 23 to grip a rope therebetween, the second stop 17 being spaced from the other arm of the lewer and located so that a rope gripped between the lever and the first stop passed between said other arm 27 and the second stop and tensioned, will by its engagement with said other arm, urge the lever to pivot in one sense to increase the grip on the rope between the one arm of the lever and the first arm pivoting of the lever in the other sense serving to release said grip. In the construction shown, the supporting member consists of two plates 13 connected together by a shackle pin 16, the stop 23 and axles 12, 18 and 21, the stop 23 being in the form of a pin. The axles 12 and 18 mount pulleys 11 and 17, the-pulley 17 constituting the first atop. The lever 20 is mounted on the axle 21. In use the shackle pin 16 is connected by a wire tie to a mast and the rope after passing between the lever and the stop pin 23 passes round the pulley 17, around the pulley of a pulley block (not shown) back to the pulley 12, after which it is connected to a shackle on the pulley block. The lever is provided with teeth 25 to increase its grip on the rope.
