Fig. 6 shows a clamp construction comprising outer parts 35, 35a urged together by jack 38, and inner parts 37, 37a slidable within the outer parts over ball bearings 36 by a lead screw mechanism 39, 42 and electric motor (not shown). During the initial and final stages of bending, the inner parts and pipe may be advanced relative to the outer parts and arm at, say, half the speed of advance of the pipe through the heater,
