Abstract
1290805 Making springs; coiling helices MOOG INDUSTRIES Inc 28 May 1971 18100/71 Headings B3A and B3E [Also in Division G3] The subject-matter of this Specification is substantially the same as that described in Specification 1,238,409, but the claims are concerned with controlling the helical angle of the coil formed by moving a carriage 37, having rod guiding rolls 44<SP>1</SP>, 45<SP>1</SP> and 47, with respect to the guide 22 at preselected points during rotation of the mandrel 11. In operation the rod is clamped to the mandrel by a dog d and, prior to movement of the guide 22, the carriage 37 is moved to a predetermined position relative to the guide 22 so as to present the rod to the mandrel at a predetermined helix angle. The guide 22 is then moved by rotating lead screw 20 to form coils on the mandrel 11 and the helix angle of the coils being formed is controlled by movement of the carriage 37. The additional control system 65-68, Fig. 6, for determining the movement of the carriage 37 is the same as the control system for determining the movement of the guide 22 as described in Specification 1,238,409.
