1,057,171. Bending tubes. HILGERS MASCHINENUND APPARATE-BAUANSTALT MIT BESCHRANKTER HAFTUNG. April 1, 1964 [April 6, 1963]. No. 13478/64. Heading B3E. A tube bender has a pivotable bending pattern with a curved working portion, pivoted eccentrically in relation to the curved working surface and a bending mandrel for insertion in the tube. A tube 18 to be bent is held at one end in a chuck 19 on a carriage 20 running on rails 21 and controlled by abutments 22, Fig. 2 (not shown), and limit switches 23. The other end of the tube 18 is held against a former 12 by a clamping device 15, the former 12 being of varying radius about its shaft 13. A mandrel 17 supports the tube at its bending point. In operation, as the former 12 is rotated by its shaft 13 a sliding rail 16 is kept urged against the tube 18 by a hydraulic means 24, the mandrel 17 is allowed to move sideways, to compensate for the varying diameter of. the former 12, under control of springs 28d and hydraulic means 28, and the mandrel 17 is moved longitudinally by coarse and fine hydraulic adjustment means 31, 32 which may be controlled from the drive of the shaft 13. The mandrel 17 may be pivotally mounted at its end remote from the former 12.
