[Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Coiling, corrugating, rolling, caulking:-In a method of making a gilled tube, an internal mandrel is used to deform or suppress interior corrugations formed by rolling a helical groove in the rotating tube to receive the gill strip. A travelling carriage 5 on a saddle 4 of a screwcuttiug-lathe adjustably supports a profiled skew-roll 11, forming a groove in a chuck-held tube 10 into which a strip 14 secured to the tube at the chuck end by a clamp 73 is fed through a guide 43, 44, and a caulking-tool 15 which closes the groove edges to grip the strip. A surface-hardened mandrel 50 is rotatably secured on the reduced end 51 of a rod 52 supported by a carriage extension 60, and is thereby maintained in fixed relation to the operating tools 11, 15. A tapered leading edge of the mandrel 50 facilitates corrugation deformation and the mandrel length is sufficient to support tube under the tools 11, 15. To form a smooth bore a round ended cylindrical or uniformly tapered mandrel 50 is used, and any external corrugations are reduced by the caulking-tool 15. The mandrel 50 may be ribbed to produce longitudinal corrugations.
