Abstract

1333831 Drawing BABCOCK & WILCOX CO 19 April 1971 [14 May 1970] 25632/71 Heading B3P [Also in Division F2] A rotary pierced metal tube is formed with a straight bore by cold drawing the tube 10 using a mandrel 12 of uniform cross-section, which mandrel is advanced through the die 17 during the drawing operation to an end position downstream of the die 17. A cylindrical mandrel 12 is first positioned against the pointed end of a steel tube to be drawn. At the start of the draw the mandrel 12 is advanced with the tube through the die 17 until it reaches the desired end position downstream of the die 17, a distance greater than one-half the mandrel diameter, e.g. at least 4 inches. The bore of the drawn tube may have a straightness within a tolerance of Œ0À010 inch in 15 inches or an internal surface wave of amplitude less than one-third of that of an external surface wave.
