Abstract

1,161,961. Straightening. SCHUMAG SCHUMACHER METALLWERKE G.m.b.H. 1 Jan., 1968 [27 Jan., 1967], No. 95/68. Heading B3E. An apparatus for straightening axially rotating bar or tube of round section advancing therethrough comprises a freely rotatable die having a converse internal surface, and a freely rotatable roller having a concave external surface which is eccentrically located inside the die so that the minimum distance between the surfaces of the die and roller is equal to the diameter of the workpiece, the axes of the die and roller each being set at an angle to the axis of the stock approximately equal to the helix angle of the helical path generated by a point on the rotating axially fed stock, the said angles being in opposing directions relative to the axis of the stock. The work 1, as it passes between the die 5 and the roller 6, contacts the roller at two spaced-apart points and the die at a point intermediate the points where it contacts the roller. Preferably the axial cross-section of the roller is hyperbolic, in which case the angle between the axes of the roller and the work can be adjusted so that the work makes line contact with the roller. The axial length of the roller is about 1.5 times the length of a conventional straightening die, so that the unstraightened portions at the beginning and end of each workpiece are very short. The die and roller may be preceded by two conventional straightening dies 2 and 4, which straighten the majority of the length of each workpiece, leaving only the ends to be straightened by the die and roller. The transverse force which must be exerted on the work to straighten it, is a function of the distance between the points at which the work contacts the roller and the length of the roller is chosen so that this force is not so high as to damage the surface of the workpiece.
