Abstract
1497084 Brazing CERAMEL Ltd 29 April 1976 [31 Jan 1975] 4330/75 Heading B3R [Also in Division H2] A cable termination comprises a metal sleeve 16 part of which overlies the end of the metal sheath 13 of a cable 10 carrying an insulated conductor 11, the sheath or the sleeve or both having an annular recess 14 in which fusible bonding material 27 is located which extends from the recess to provide bonding between the sleeve and the sheath. In the embodiment shown the recess 14 is located in the sheath 13 and bonding is effected by locating a ring of brazing material in the recess 14 and applying heat by means of an induction coil adjacent the recess on the side remote from the cable end so that the brazing material runs away from the recess by capillary action. A ceramic tube 17 is bonded at one end to sleeve 16 and at the other to a cap 18 having a bore 22 through which conductor 11 extends and to which the conductor is bonded. The cap and sleeve are formed of titanium, the sheath of stainless steel and the bonding material for the bonds between the sheath and sleeve, and the cap and conductor, of silver, so that the termination can be used in installations where temperatures in the region of 650‹ C. are experienced. Instead of silver a silver-bearing alloy may be used as bonding material.
