Abstract

1490408 Joining glass to metal PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 9 July 1975 [12 July 1974] 28894/75 Heading ClM [Also in Division H5] A glass tube (e.g. of fused silica) is slipped on to a metal part to which it is to be sealed, and is heated, in a non-oxidizing shielding gas, by passage through a high-frequency electric field to give a melting zone, in which zone is located a non-short-circuited conductive winding. Fig. 4 of the drawings shows the main heating coil 4 and the conductive winding 5 surrounding the glass tube 7 which is to be fused to the metal rod 6 rotated by the chuck 8 while the shielding gas is passed through tube 3. The shielding gas may be nitrogen or incombustible mixed gas (N 2 /H 2 mixture) and the metal may be tungsten or thoriated tungsten.
