Abstract
1481583 Magnesium oxide-chrome ore refractory shapes GENERAL REFRACTORIES CO 21 May 1975 [3 June 1974] 21694/75 Heading C1J A method of making a magnesium oxidechrome ore refractory shape involves admixing 40-80% of dead-burned magnesite (periclase) with 60-20% of chrome ore, the mixture containing fines and a combined total of up to 5% of CaO and SiO 2 by weight, the weight ratio of the CaO to SiO 2 being at least 1 :1, forming the mixture into a refractory shape and firing the shape at a temperature of at least 2950‹ F. The CaO content in the mixture may be increased by the addition of a calcium compound decomposable to CaO at the firing temperature. The maximum content of CaO and SiO 2 in the mixture is preferably not more than 3À5% and the ratio of CaO : SiO 2 not over 3 : 1. The fines in the mixture passing through a 100 mesh Tyler screen may amount to 20-45% of the total mixture by weight and the weight ratio of chrome ore to magnesite in the fines at least 1 : 1, preferably 2 : 1.
