Abstract

1473221 Transporting bridge sections MAGIRUS-DEUTZ AG 11 Sept 1974 [23 Oct 1973] 39658/74 Heading B7B [Also in Division E1] Bridge sections are carried side-by-side on cross members of a vehicle. At least some of the cross members are extensible and carry pivoted holding arms so that the bridge sections can be manipulated and connected to form two bridge halves before transfer to a bridge laying vehicle. As illustrated, the vehicle has four cross members 7-10 supporting four bridge sections 11-14 with their wheel track surfaces 15, 16 vertical. In the finished bridge, sections 11 and 14 are connected together at ends 19 and 22 to form one longitudinal half of the bridge, and sections 12 and 13 are similarly connected to form the other longitudinal half. Before transfer to the laying vehicle, sections 11 and 12 are connected to each other, as are sections 13 and 14. To arrange the sections for this connection, rams 35, 36 are operated to pivot holding arms 31, 32 outwardly from their Fig. 3 positions to horizontal positions. Further rams push the sections out on to the holding arms and then push extensions 25, 26 from the cross members so that the Fig. 4 condition is reached. Finally, the holding arms turn the sections inwardly through 90 degrees and the sections are moved towards each other so that their struts 23 and 24 can be joined. The bridge laying vehicle, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), for a laying jib which, after insertion into a guideway between sections 11 and 12, draws the sections off the transport vehicle. The transport vehicle may also carry legs 40, 41 and a transverse bearer 42 for supporting an end of the bridge if it is not long enough to reach across the relevant obstacle. Appropriate positioning of the laying vehicle after the latter has received the bridge sections will allow the legs and bearer to be connected to the sections and then to be drawn off the transport vehicle as the laying vehicle is moved away, Fig. 8 (not shown).
