Abstract

147,219. Junkers, H. Nov. 11, 1916, [Convention date]. Regulating.-An engine for aircraft is constructed with a piston of larger diameter than would be necessary at sea-level, the compression space not being reduced. A regulating device, which may be automatic, inserted in the air induction pipe, is adapted to throttle the air supply according to the varying density of the air or to adjust the valve-gear of the cylinders or pump so as to shorten the duration of opening in air of greater density. In the device shown, a throttle valve 2 in the induction pipe is loaded by a spring 3, and the tension on the spring is controlled by an aneroid chamber 6. The control may, however, be applied to the valve-gear and may act through a relay. In applying the invention to a twostroke-cycle engine, the exhaust is withdrawn from the cylinder and air is drawn in at a pressure lower than atmospheric.
