1463998 Antistatic shoes F WERNER 19 Dec 1974 [19 Dec 1973] 54866/74 Heading A3B An antistatic shoe has an insole 4 with conducting elements 8a, 8b positioned on either side and electrically connected, e.g. by being sewn to the insole using metallic thread, an outer sole 1 through which extend conducting plugs 6, that are part of a conducting layer 5 intermediate the sole 1 and insole 4. The conducting elements 8a, 8b may be thin strips of metal or fabric having a metal thread; they may be the upper and lower surfaces of a single element that passes through slots in the insole 4 (8 Fig. 6, not shown). The intermediate layer 5 and plugs 6 are preferably a single item, e.g. of rubber or plastics impregnated with carbon, and preferably positioned near the ball of the foot although it may be e.g. at the heel with the plugs extending through the heel also. Alternative positioning, e.g. at the heel (Fig. 9, not shown), is possible or even a multiplicity of layers 5 and/or conducting elements 8. Elements 8 may also be attached to other inserts, e.g. an inlay sole (11 Fig. 11, not shown) if these are required. A steel intermediate sole of a safety shoe may also form part of the electrical path. Wooden shoes or clogs may incorporate a wooden insole 4 having conducting elements 8 and a thin rubber or plastics sole 1 through which the plugs 6 pass.
