Abstract

1,212,063. Boots &c. H. E. ROSEN. 9 Jan., 1968 [26 Jan., 1967], No. 1269/68. Heading A3B. A shoe has at least one longitudinally extending side margin of the upper free of fixed stationary connection to the sole, the margin being connected to the sole by elastic means so that the width of the shoe can be varied. In a first embodiment (Figs. 3, 4) the upper 10 of a mocassin type shoe has a cut-out 22, 23, 24, 25 in its base portion in which an elastic sheet 20 is sewn by stitching 26. The upper 10 is secured to the mid-sole 14 by stitching 27, 28, 29 thus allowing the margins 24, 25 to move outwardly to increase the width of the shoe. The mid-sole 14 is secured to the outer sole 16 by stitching 30. In a modification (not shown) the base of the upper corresponding to the cut-out is provided with lines of staggered cuts to allow the margins to move outwardly, the sheet of elastic material is secured beneath the cut area and the line of stitching 29 is omitted. In a second embodiment (Fig. 9) the upper 10 is again provided with cuts 32 and is stitched at 34 to an elastic sheet 20<SP>11</SP>. The sheet 20<SP>11</SP> extends to the edge of the sole 16<SP>1</SP> and is secured to the sole by stitching 30<SP>1</SP>. A welt strip 36 may also be provided. In a modification (not shown) the sheet 20<SP>11</SP> extends to the edge of felt platform midsole, down the sides of the midsole and between the midsole and outersole where it is joined to the outer sole. In a third embodiment (Fig. 12) the upper 10 is provided with slits 32 and is secured to the outer sole 16<SP>111</SP> by a strip 50 of elastic material which is sewn to the upper 10 at 52, extends over the edge of a platform midsole 44 and is adhered to the outer sole 16<SP>111</SP> at 51. In a modification (not shown) the strip 50 is bonded to the edge of the outer sole instead of its upper surface.
