Abstract

Shoe has an inner assembly (48) having a deformable portion (46, 50) which acts together with the shoe upper (24) to adjust the girth of the shoe to fit feet of differing widths and girths. Pref. the portion is resiliently deformable and can be made of elastic sheet material, on adjustably tensioned spring or a deformable gas filled bladder. The elastic material can be a spandex fabric. The inner assembly (48) can be made in part of plastic foam.
