Abstract

1460672 Tunnelling machines ROBBINS CO 16 July 1974 [1 Aug 1973] 31468/74 Heading E1F A tunnelling machine comprises a shield 10, a cutting head 20 movable orbitally around the longitudinal axis of the shield by means 40, preferably a bulkhead 58 to which the cutting head is connected via a flexible wall section 56, and a material removal duct 83 which opens into the region of the cutting head through the bulkhead. The cutting head is mounted on a shaft 24 which extends from a universal joint assembly 26, 28 and is acted on by a radially extending circumferentially spaced array of piston and cylinder units 40 which are cyclically supplied with pulses of actuating fluid from a unit (not shown) at the rear. Cutting fluid is delivered to the face via a delivery conduit 84 extending through the shaft 24 and/or a further conduit 87. A second bulkhead 64 is also provided with a flexible wall section 74.
