Abstract

A coal cutting machine with a drum (21) carrying the coal picks (23) incorporating supply channels (25) to feed water to jets (27) between the picks, has a two part rotary joint (9, 14) mounted coaxially on the drive shaft (5) to supply water to these channels, designed to prevent water seeping into the reduction gear driving the shaft (5). The water supply line (17) connects to the rearmost flange (9) which is shaped for retention by a system of collars which also retains an annular collar (19) leaving a channel (15) which extends only partially around the shaft, so that water is supplied intermittently to the jets (27), thus reducing the risk of seepage.
