Abstract

1477092 Tunnelling machines ROBBINS CO 13 June 1975 [20 June 1974] 25366/75 Heading E1F In a tunnelling machine the front and rear shields 80, 82 are telescopically joined together. The front shield 80 carries a power driven rotary cutter head means feeding a spoil-removing conveyer extending through the shields. Thrust rams 130 are provided between the two shields for pushing the forward shield forwardly relative to the rear shield while the cutter head means is being operated to mine the tunnel face. and also pull the rear shield forwardly relative to the front shield. The rear shield includes a gripper assembly for reacting against thrust and torque exerted on the rear shield and a rearwardly extending tail section under the protection of which portions of a tunnel lining can be erected as the machine advances. Preferably auxiliary thrust rams 86 extend rearwardly from the rear shield to react against forward portions of the tunnel lining. A pair of side placed piston cylinder units 154 may be interconnected between frame portions of the two shields to serve to transmit counter rotational torque to the cutter head support of the front shield.
