Abstract

A tunnelling digger shield is disclosed which, is constructed in two main parts which are detachably connected to each other, the parts being a cylindrical cutting head driving unit (1) carrying a motor (12) for driving a cutting head (34) which, in use, is fitted to the unit, and a cylindrical thrust unit (15) carrying hydraulic shove rams (20) for advancing the shield. When a different diameter tunnel is to be driven, the shield is easily modified to change its effective diameter as necessary, either by fitting cylindrical shells to the cutting head driving unit (1) and the thrust unit (15), or by replacing the whole thrust unit (15) by one of a different size. The same cutting head driving unit (1) is used for each different diameter shield, although the actual cutting head (34) will be changed. <IMAGE>
