Abstract
1458811 Two-part coupling A B ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS Ltd 15 Feb 1974 [15 Nov 1972] 52790/72 Heading H2E To retain contact elements within the bodies of multi-cable connector members against cable tension, each member, having female contacts 12 or male contacts (shown dashed in Fig. 1), carries its contacts within two insulating inserts 14, 16. Resilient hard plastics collets 18, each with cylindrical body 20 loosely fitting in a recess in insert 16 and with expansible split fingers 22 within a counterbore 42 of insert 14, are trapped between insert 16 and resilient gasket 40 by flanges 44. Each contact 12 is waisted and after crimping to a cable is inserted from the rear through resilient gripping grommet 52 to lock within its collet, with shoulder 28 engaging the nose of the fingers, the female or male contacting part 12 being received in a bore 38 of insert 14. To remove a contact, split tool 60 is slipped along the cable to dilate the collet. After all contacts have been inserted, cover 56 is screwed into the rear of the metal shell 10 round each pair of inserts and a cable clamp (not shown) is fitted. Alternative designs include a contact with parallel waist or with a retention collar instead of a waist: the contact may carry lugs to fit behind the collet to prevent forward movement, in which case tool 60 is slotted to pass the lugs. Each collet may carry a second flange at the rear, sprung through the insert 16. The contacts may be soldered to the cables after their assembly in insert 16 in lieu of crimping, insert 14 being fitted subsequently.
