Abstract

145,636. Retterath, V. June 30, 1919, [Convention date]. Joints and connexions.-A universal joint for axles, shafts, artificial limbs, &c. comprises a spherical surface 5, Fig. 3, integral with the end of one member 1 and flanked by guide jaws 4. Between the jaws 4 project two parallel jaws 3 formed on the member 2, the inner faces of the jaws 3 being cupshaped to engage the spherical surface. The spherical surface 5 is formed by a rotating tool 6, Fig. 5, which is moved through an angle about the centre of the spherical surface and in a plane parallel to the guide jaws 4 and midway between them. The tool 6 is formed from a cylindrical steel bar by cutting out two diametrically-opposite quarter sectors and recessing the front face. The trailing edges 8 of the cutting edges 7 are chamfered.
