[Class 80 (ii)] [See also Group XXV] In a ball joint in which the opening of the socket 12 has a diameter less than the maximum diameter of the socket, the ball 13 is formed with a peripheral recess 14 with one edge 16 adjacent to a diametral plane of the ball, so that the ball can be inserted into the socket in the position shown and is locked therein by turning it about an axis other than that perpendicular to the diametral plane referred to. The joint is particularly applicable for connecting the ends of two shafts which drive one another through a universal joint such as that described in Specification 430,226, the socket 12 being fixed to the end of one shaft while the ball 13 has a bore 20 for free engagement by the other shaft ; the ends of the ball are flattened, and the recess 14 may be formed at the flattened part.
