Abstract

1443282 Electrophotographic developers HOECHST AG 1 July 1974 [29 June 1973] 29100/74 Heading C3P [Also in Divisions G2-G3] The developer, which comprises an electrically insulating carrier liquid having dispersed therein pigment particles encapsulated by polymeric material and preferably having a particle size of from 0À1-12 Á, is prepared by dispersing a homogeneous particularte mixture of the polymer and the pigment in the carrier liquid at a temperature at which the polymer is appreciably soft and grinding the resulting mixture as it cools to room temperature. In the examples, carbon black is encapsulated with a polymeric material comprising a vinyl toluene/octyl acrylate or a styrene/n-butyl methacrylate copolymer. Additional materials present in the exemplified developers, either incorporated in the polymeric material or dispersed or dissolved in the carrier liquid include Reflex Blue, spirit soluble nigrosin, oleic acid salts of nigrosin or induline, a styrene/butadiene copolymer, an aliphatic hydrocarbon resin, a colophony ester, and polyvinyl stearate. The carrier liquid is an aliphatic hydrocarbon of boiling range 174- 191‹ C. to which may be added small amounts, e.g. 2 g./l., of an aromatic hydrocarbon, a halogenated hydrocarbon, a ketone or an ester, to increase the tackiness of the pigmented polymer.
