Abstract

944,394. Electrophotographic developers. KALLE A. G. Aug. 10, 1960 [Aug. 17,1959], No. 27695/60. Heading G2H. An electrophotographic developer comprises a mixture of a finely divided carrier and two distinguishable toners, one of which has a positive charge and the other of which has a negative charge relative to the carrier. The carrier may be of glass quartz, metal, potassium or copper sulphate, potassium or sodium chloride, polystyrene, carboxymethyl cellulose, or glass balls covered with an organic resin or crystals of oxalic acid, adipic acid or phthalic anhydride, the carrier particles being between 100 and 600 Á. For carriers of glass or iron, the positive toner may be one or more of the following: colophony, copal resins, dammar resin, asphalt, colophonymodified phenol resins, ketone resins, maleic resins, coumarone resins, polyacrylic acid resins, and polystyrenes; and may contain inorganic or organic pigments or dyestuffs. The positive toner may include animal, vegetable, or synthetic waxes and/or a low-melting point organic compound such as α- or #-naphthol, acenaphthene, acetanilide, #-dibromobenzene, 2:4-diaminotoluene o-phenylenediamine, resorcinol, or diphenylamine or derivatives thereof. In Example 5 a photoconductive oxadiazole is also included in the positive toner. The negative toner may be a metal resinate, a vinyl chloride copolymer containing carboxyl groups as in Specification 944, 393, or a combination of these with at least half as the resinate, and the negative toners may also include wax and low melting organic compounds and dyestuffs and pigments as described for the positive toners. The toner particle zones should be within the range 1 to 100 Á, and should comprise by weight 0.1 to 10% of the weight of the carrier. The ratio between the toners may be between 1 : 1 and 10 : 1. Mixtures of toners of the same charge may be used and in an example the positive toner is red and the negative toner is a mixture of green and blue particles.
