Abstract

1281741 Electrostatographic developers RICOH K K 1 July 1969 [1 July 1968] 33225/69 Heading G2H An electrostatographic liquid developer comprises 1 to 50 parts by weight of a toner dispersed in 1000 parts by weight of a carrier liquid having a volume electrical resistivity of more than 10<SP>9</SP>#cm, said toner comprising pigment particles coated with two or more resinous layers, the innermost layer comprising 0À5-10 parts by weight (per 1 part by weight of pigment particles) of a resin which is insoluble in the carrier liquid and which is selected from a group A consisting of polystyrene, styrene-butylmethacrylate copolymer, styrene-laurylmethacrylate copolymer, styrenehydroxyethylmethacrylate copolymer, styrene-butadiene copolymer, methylmethacrylatebutylmethacrylate copolymer, epoxy resin and phenol resin and the outermost layer comprising 1-20 parts by weight (per 1 part by weight of pigment particles) of a resin which is swollen by the carrier liquid and which is selected from a group B consisting of styrene-laurylmethacrylate copolymer, styrene-butylmethacrylate-acrylic acid copolymer, butylmethacrylate homopolymer, vinyl toluene-vinyl acetate copolymer, phenolmodified alkyd resin, laurylmethacrylatehydroxyethylmethacrylate copolymer, and styrene-butadiene copolymer. The toner particles may additionally have an intermediate layer of a resin selected from those listed above but different from those forming the inner and outer layers. In the Examples the toners comprise (1) Spirit black coated with copoly (styrene/butylmethacrylate) and then polybutylmethacrylate, (2) Aniline black coated with copoly (styrene/laurylmethacrylate), polybutylmethacrylate and then copoly (laurylmethacrylate/hydroxyethylmethacrylate), and (3) carbon black coated with copoly (methyl methacrylate/ butylmethacrylate) and the copoly (styrene /butadiene).
