Abstract

951,642. Developing electrostatic images. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. March 24, 1960 [April 13, 1959], No.10529/60. Heading G2H. A developer for electrostatic images comprises a dispersion of finely-divided electroscopic particles in a liquid dimethyl polysiloxane having a viscosity of between 0.6 and 3 centistokes, with which compatible insulating liquids may be mixed to an extent which does not appreciably affect the properties of the siloxane, the concentration of particles in the liquid being not greater than onefifth by weight of the developer. Examples of compatible insulating liquids are high flash naphthas, kerosene, and trichlorotrifluoroethane. The electroscopic particles which preferably are of diameter not greater than 74Á may be of one or more natural or synthetic waxes or resins of melting point below 200‹C. and may contain one or more colouring materials. Specified materials for the particles include thermoplastic resins comprising polymers of styrene, substituted styrene and its homologues, a synthetic octadecene amide wax, carnauba wax, microcrystalline petroleum wax, a solid thermoplastic silicone resin, and a polyvinyl chloride containing a small proportion of polyvinyl acetate while the colouring materials may be carbon black, various dyes insoluble in the dimethyl polysiloxane, and insulating or photoconductive zinc oxide. Dispersing agents such as calcium stearate and a hydrogenated tallow derivative of imidazoline may be included to assist in coating the pigment particles or ball-milling them with the waxes or resins so that they form the core of the developer particles. By using toner particles comprising photoconductive zinc oxide different colour images may be successively produced in superposition on a single electrophotographic surface. If non-photoconductive zinc oxide is used overprinting cannot be effected.
