Abstract

An electrophotographic toner consists of a solid solution of polystyrene, another synthetic resin soluble in polystyrene, a dyestuff soluble in the mixture of polystyrene and other resins, and optionally a small quantity of fillers and/or pigments. The other synthetic resin may be chlorodiphenyl, indene or coumarone resin. In one Example (1), 60 parts by weight of chlorodiphenyl resin is melted in a bath and mixed with 40 parts by weight of polystyrene and then with 10 parts by weight of Sudan deep Black BB. After stirring, the homogenous mixture formed is poured on a brass plate and cooled and then ground in a ball mill to a particle size of between 2 and 20 microns. A mixture of the toner with iron powder is used in a cascade or magnetic developing apparatus. In other examples, the following dyestuffs are included: Oil Black HBN, Brilliant Spirit Black TN, Peerless Black, Nigronsine, Zapon Black X, Ceres Black G, Chromogen Black ETOO and Azo Oil Black. The toner may be applied as a dispersion in a carrier liquid or as an aerosol.
