Abstract

1442637 Laminates DEUTSCHE GOLDUND SILBER - SCHEIDEANSTALT 23 May 1973 [23 May 1972] 24565/73 Heading B5N [Also in Division B2] A substrate is stiffened by locally attaching a material comprising at least one backing of fibrous material and at least one thermoplastics containing at least 3 parts carbon black, subjecting the structure to ultra-high frequency radiation, forming the resulting structure and allowing it to cool. The stiffening material may be coated on one or both sides with an adhesive based on a thermoplastic plastics. The fibrous material may be woven, non-woven or knitted fabrics of natural and/or synthetic fibres, e.g. cotton, rayon, staple, polyester, polyacrylonitrile, polyamide. Alternatively the stiffening material may be made up of a base fabric and a covering fabric. Leather fibres can also be used. Thermoplastic plastics materials mentioned are homopolymers or copolymers of styrene, styrenebutadiene or styrene-acrylonitrile copolymers, styrene-acrylate copolymers or styrene-acrylonitrile - butadiene terpolymers, polychlorobutadienes, polyvinyl acetate, polyacrylates or polymethacrylates, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, nitrile rubber, ethylenevinyl acetate copolymers or terpolymers and ionomeric resins. Natural resins, phenol resins, maleic resins, modified colophony resins may be added. The adhesive may be based on polychlorobutadiene, polyvinylacetate, polyacrylic acid esters, ethylene-vinyl acetate, copolymers or nitrile rubber optionally containing natural resins, phenol resins, maleic resins, modified colophony resins. The carbon may be provided in a thermoplastic impregnant or coating, in the adhesive coating or in the form of intermediate layers between the adhesive coating and the natural stiffening material. The stiffening materials can be used for stiffening, supporting and permanently dimensionally stabilizing preferably the toe and heel sections of shoes, for stiffening and dimensionally stabilizing headwear or luggage goods. Suitable pieces are cut out or punched out and locally attached, e.g. by stitching to the substrate to be stiffened. The whole is then introduced into a microwave oven before basting and forming.
