Abstract

1438577 Boots &c E RINALDI 27 Sept 1973 [19 Oct 1972] 45207/73 Heading A3B Apparatus for heat setting footwear includes an intermittently driven conveyor belt 3 for conveying batches of footwear through a plurality of treatment regions including a vacuum treatment region, a steaming region and regions for drying the footwear with hot air, the regions being spaced apart and the operation of the vacuum treatment region being controlled and synchronised with the operation of the conveyor belt 3. As described the conveyor belt 3 passes around driven roller 4 and tensioning roller 5 and is supported by rollers 7. A batch of footwear placed on the conveyor 3 is moved initially to a vacuum treatment station where a bell chamber 9 is lowered by pneumatic or hydraulic cylinders 10 and seals against a plate 8 between the upper and lower parts of the belt 3. Steam is injected into the bell chamber 9 from a boiler 13 through a conduit 13a and the chamber is then evacuated by a pump (not shown). The batch of footwear then enters a tunnel 18. In a first region in the tunnel 18 the footwear is treated with steam from a nozzle 20 supplied by a conduit 21 from the boiler 13. The batch then moves to a region 22 having heaters 23 and a fan 24 to dry the footwear, and moves to region 25 where the heated air continues the drying. These last two steps are repeated at stations 26 and 29 and the footwear is removed from the conveyor after passing through a closure flap 30.
