Abstract

1384838 Freeze drying SMITHERM INDUSTRIES Inc 6 June 1973 [31 July 1972] 27028/73 Heading F4G A method of freeze drying a product comprises the steps of introducing the product to be dried into a zone maintained at a pressure which is less than atmospheric but is sufficiently high to suppress vaporization of volatile constituents of the product, spreading the product into a layer, freezing the product in the layer, reducing the pressure on the frozen product to a pressure below 4À6 mm. of mercury, and heating the product to effect sublimation of water from the product and thereby reduce its moisture content. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a freezing compartment 28 and a drying compartment 30 through which the product is passed in succession by means of endless belt conveyers 32, 34, 36. Product is fed on to the conveyers through a valve controlled main conduit 58 and branch conduits 61, 62, 64 and headers 72, 74, 76 and is frozen to the conveyers in compartment 28 by freezers 82 to which a coolant, such as lithium, is circulated. The pressure in compartment 28 is maintained at the required level by water vapour from a reservoir 98 in which the water is heated by a resistance heater 104. The frozen product is passed through apertures 50, in a partition 26 into drying compartment 30 which is maintained at a pressure below 4À6 mm. mercury by a vacuum pump connected thereto by way of line 188. Drying is completed by sublimation of the water using radiant heaters or radiators 106, 108, the final product passing via a main conduit 158 to hoppers 160, 162. The conveyers are advanced by rolls 44, 46, the latter being cooled by a refrigerant. Instead of a reservoir 98 being used to supply water vapour in compartment 28, steam jets may be used. The vacuum pump is connected to the line 188 by way of a condenser for removing moisture therein.
