Abstract

1435917 Road-vehicle signal lights LUCAS ELECTRICAL Ltd 4 May 1973 [16 May 1972 20 May 1972 5 Sept 1972] 22810/72 Heading G4Q In a road vehicle rear signal lamp circuit lamp dimming when the lights of the vehicle are on is achieved by supplying intermittent power to the lamp at a frequency such that the lamp appears to be continuously illuminated. In an embodiment incorporating a lighting switch 12, ignition switch 14, a conventional flasher unit 15, a direction-indicator switch 16, rear flasher lamps 19, 23, brake switch 26 and stop lamps 28 the operation is as follows: Switch 12 open.-No power is supplied to; a multivibrator 31, 32. When brake switch 26 closes a transistor 27 is saturated and lamps 28 are illuminated at full intensity and similarly for direction-indicator lamps. Switch 12 closed.-The multivibrator is energized and appropriate rear lamps appear to be illuminated continuously but at reduced intensity. It is arranged that the flashing rate is substantially constant. If a hazard warning switch (not shown) is operated to illuminate all flasher lamps simultaneously, lamps 19, 23 are at full intensity even when switch 12 is closed. It may be arranged that the stop lamps are dimmed by a different amount from the flasher lamps. A current-sensitive element may be included in series with transistor 27 to ensure that power is supplied continuously to lamps 28 until they are hot, and similarly for the flasher lamps.
