Abstract

1435919 Road vehicle luminous signals LUCAS ELECTRICAL Ltd 1 May 1973 [20 May 1972 25 Aug 1972] 23837/72 Heading G4Q In a vehicle lighting system having a dimming resistor 18 automatically connected in series with rear stop lamps 19, 21 when the lighting switch 12 is on, timing means is rendered operable when the stop lamp switch 17 is closed for short-circuiting resistor 18 for a time sufficient to permit illumination of the stop lamps. The lag in illumination of the stop lamps (at night) due to the dimming resistor 18 can be dangerous when vehicles are fast; the invention overcomes this disadvantage. In the embodiment of the figure the timing means is a transistor 41 and RC circuit 42, 43. Alternatively the timing means comprises a thermal switch the heating element of which is connected across the dimming resistor/stop lamp circuit and having a normally closed contact across the dimming resistor; in a modification the heating element is in parallel with the stop lamps: cooling of the heating element is then more rapid.
