Abstract

143,205. Dayton Engineering Laboratories Co., (Assignees of Chryst, W. A.). May 12, 1919, [Convention date]. Turning-gear.-In a starter for internalcombustion engines comprising an electric motor and a pinion adapted to engage an engine gear, a controlling member controls the starting of the electric motor and also controls mechanically the forward movement of the pinion, which in the event of obstruction of its engaging movement by the engine gear is set for rapid enmeshment prior to the rotation of the electric motor. In the form shown, the starter pinion 94 is slidably keyed upon a shaft 9U driven from the armature shaft 40 of the starting motor 30 through gears 80, 81 with helical teeth and a roller clutch 82. The pinion 94 is moved into engagement with an engine gear by means of a pedal 113 acting through a forked lever 110 and a grooved sleeve 97 connected to a shell 100, the end 101 of which engages a flange 95 on the pinion. The movement of the lever 110 and sleeve 97 is communicated to the pinion through a coil spring 103 bearing against the flange 95. The motor is a four-pole machine having a pair of brushes 50, 51, Fig. 4, connected to the field coils 39 and to the battery, one pole of which is earthed. The other brushes 56, 57 are earthed and are normally held away from the commutator. When the pedal 113 is depressed, the brushes 56, 57 are brought into contact with the commutator by means of a link 66, which has a cam surface 70 and slides in a slot 67 in the motor casing, a plunger 64 being interposed between the link 66 and an arm 63 on the brushcarrier 54. The other brush-carrier 55 is acted upon through arms 60, 61 and a plate 62. The armature is moved axially by the attraction of the field coils and the action of the helical gears 80, 81, and a cork braking-ring 43 on the armature shaft is thus moved out of contact with the end member of the motor casing.
