Abstract

1430500 Making metal powder INDUSTRIAL MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY Inc 18 March 1974 [22 March 1973] 11941/74 Headings B3V and B3A Metal powder particles are produced by continuously feeding a metal wire (or rod) 30 into contact with a disc 10 having its peripheral surface rotating within a first magnetic field perpendicular to the wire 30 and continuously applying a direct current through the wire 30 and disc 10 so as to produce discrete molten metal masses which are cooled into metal particles as they are urged from the disc 10 by the first magnetic field interacting with a second magnetic field produced around the wire 30 by the D.C. current. A grooved disc 10 is mounted on a water cooled shaft 18 for rotation in a gap 12 defined between polepieces 44, 46 of an electromagnet 14. Wire 30 is fed downwardly from a reel 26 by a variable speed feeder 32 toward and into contact with the disc 10 which together with the wire 30 is connected to a D.C. power source. Arcing is intermittently produced between the continuously advanced wire 30 and rotating disc 10 resulting in the production of molten metal particles which are flung sideways, by the interaction of the magnetic field between the electromagnet polepieces 44, 46 and the magnetic field around the wire 30, against a sloping wall (68) (Fig. 2, not shown) and collected in a bin (70). Any particles attracted to the electromagnet 14 are removed by providing water cooled copper terminals 48, 50 cemented to the polepieces 44, 46 and connected to an A.C. supply and by providing a grooved copper disc 54 rotating within the gap 12 in the opposite direction to the disc 10. Metal powder adhering to the disc 54 is removed by a wiper blade 64. The operation may take place in an inert atmosphere or a vacuum chamber 66.
