Abstract

1,046,832. Magnetic separators. CARPCO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING, Inc. Jan. 14, 1964 [Jan. 2, 1964], No. 1539/64. Heading B2J. A magnetic separator for working up ores of weakly magnetic materials such as molybdenum or tungsten ores comprises one or more magnets 2, Figs. 1 and 2 producing fields between opposite poles 5, 6 integral with the magnets, a movable container 19 which is packed with induced polepieces 25 retained therein by at least one foraminous wall 22, means 23 for moving the container and induced polepieces relatively to the field poles so that they pass into and out of the effective magnetic fields and means, such as nozzles 28, for contacting the material to be separated with the induced polepieces in the magnetic fields. The induced polepieces, which may be in the form of plates, grooved plates, helical rods, cubes, spheres or deformed metallic screens, are retained in an annular container 19 which is provided with top and bottom screens 26, 22 and driven by a motor 23 so as to pass between adjustably-mounted poles 5, 6 of two magnets which may be permanent magnets, or electromagnets as shown. The material to be separated is fed as a slurry through the nozzles 28 and wash water supplied through nozzles 29 into the magnetic field where the magnetic particles are retained on the induced polepieces 25 and the non- magnetic particles fall through with the water into a launder. When the induced polepieces leave the magnetic fields, the weakly magnetic particles fall into launders assisted by wash water supplied through nozzles 30. Any ferromagnetic particles remaining on the induced polepieces are removed as the annular container passes through the field of a degaussing unit 31 and a further wash water nozzle 33. In another embodiment, Fig. 8, the induced polepieces are retained in a container 50 which is reciprocated between the field poles 51 and 52 of three electromagnets by a drive assembly 54. Both the feed nozzles 55, 56 and the wash water nozzles 60, 61 are alternately operated as the container is moved to the right and left.
