Abstract

1429598 Removing coatings A B DICK CO 26 March 1974 [29 March 1973] 13408/74 Heading B2E A coating, such as a photoconductive layer of selenium, is separated from a metal substrate to which it is bonded, said coating and substrate having different thermal coefficients of expansion, by cooling the coated substrate to a temperature well below 0‹C, wetting the coated surface with a liquid which freezes above the temperature to which the coated substrate has been cooled, to form a layer of frozen liquid on the coated surface, and applying heat to at least one surface of the coated substrate to cause the frozen liquid with the coating adhered there to separate from the metal substrate. The liquid is usually water, and the coated substrate, e.g. photolithographic aluminium drum with a photoconductive layer of selenium, may be cooled by immersion in liquid nitrogen. Subsequent heating may be by spraying either the frozen liquid layer (i.e. ice) or the opposite surface of the substrate, with warm water, when the ice layer having the selenium adhered thereto separates from the substrate. The selenium may then be recovered from the melted ice.
