Abstract

A process for breaking the bond between a joint ring and a metal plate by immersing in liquid nitrogen so that the plate is cooled to about -80 degrees C. The process is for the removal of joint rings from the plates of plate heat exchangers or similar units which have a sealing gasket cemented by adhesive on one surface. The bond is broken rapidly so that removal of the old joint is quick and easy; it is unnecessary to apply heat or to use mechanical means with possible damage to the plates. Because of the differing thermal conductivity between the metal and the gasket, a short immersion, for example 1 - 2 minutes, is all that is needed.
