Abstract

1429154 Traverse mechanism JAKOB MULLER 10 Jan 1974 [10 Jan 1973] 01191/74 Heading D1J [Also in Division E2] An apparatus for selectively holding a reciprocating element 7 of a textile machine in one of its two terminal positions comprises: an energizable electromagnet 2; a holding element 4, the holding element being movable, when the electromagnet 2 is de-energized, from a first position in which it bears against the electromagnet into a second position, and wherein in one of its positions the holding element 4 locks the reciprocating element 7 in one of its terminal positions, there being:- a control mechanism 8, 9, 12, 13 synchronised with the machine for (a) moving the holding element from its second position into its first position; or (b) lifting the holding element off the electromagnet when the electromagnet is deenergized; or (c) carrying out both (a) and (b). 'In Fig. 1 the electromagnet 2, when energized, holds the element 4 out of locking engagement with the reciprocating element 7. When the electromagnet 2 is de-energized and a control cam 13 is rotated to a setting in which the protruding portion 13a of the cam 13 moves away from the roller 12, a lever 8 and therewith a member 9 are rocked clockwise by a spring 11 to permit a spring 6 to rock the element 4 to a setting in which the element 4 engages a notch in the reciprocating element 7. To release the reciprocating element 7 the control cam 13 is rotated until the protruding portion 13a of the cam 13 again rocks the roller 12 and thus the lever 8 upwardly. This causes the member 9 to rock the element 4 clockwise into engagement with the electromagnet 2. The electromagnet may then be energized to hold the element 4. With this embodiment the electromagnet need only be sufficiently strong to hold the element, but not strong enough to attract it away from the element 7. Fig. 3 shows an embodiment similar to Fig. 1 except that the control cam 13 now has a recess 13c; and the previous member 9 that is to the right of nose portion 4a of the element 4 is replaced by a member 14 that is to the left of the nose portion 4a. When the electromagnet is deenergized the spring 6 should rock the element 4 into engagement with the element 7. In case residual magnetism holds the element 4 against the electromagnet the cam 13 is rotated until the roller 12 is able to drop down into the recess 13c. This allows the spring 11 to rock the lever 8 and therewith the finger 14 clockwise so that the finger 14 acts against a part 4a of the element 4 to force it off the electromagnet. Fig. 6 (not shown) shows an apparatus incorporating the member 9 of Fig. 1 and the member 14 of Fig. 3, the cam 13 having a protruding portion 13a and a diametrically approved recess 13c. With this embodiment the element 4 can be mechanically rocked into engagement with the electromagnet by the member 9; be held there whilst the magnet is energized; and when the electromagnet is de-energised any residual magnetism can be overcome by causing the member 14 to rock the element 4 away from the electromagnet. In Fig. 8 the lever 20 is normally in a position such that a groove 20a thereof is in the setting illustrated in broken lines. A nose 18a on a reciprocating plunger 18 then moves freely between stops 20b and 20c at the ends of the groove 20a. When the cam 23 is rotated such that a protruding portion 23a forces the lever 20 to the right, the stop 20b engages the nose 18a and forces an armature plate 17 against an electromagnet 16. The magnet 16 may then be energized to hold the plunger 18 against reciprocation. When the electromagnet 16 is switched off the cam 23 is rotated to present the recess 23c to the roller 22 on the lever 20. The lever 20 then moves to the left and the spring 19 pulls the armature 17 away from the electromagnet 16. Normal reciprocation of the plunger 18 may then take place. If there is residual magnetism in the electromagnet the stop 20c on moving to the left engages the nose 18a to pull the armature 17 off the electromagnet 16.
