Abstract

[Also in Division H1] An electro-mechanical actuator for a record card punching machine comprises a punch 17 adapted to be engaged by the free end of a resilient interposer 39 when the latter is reciprocated by an eccentric 47, and electromagnetic means 52, 53 selectively operable to move the free end into and out of the engaging position. The punch 17 is provided with a member 20 slidable in a guide 18 and having a projection 22 for engagement with a restore bail 37 and a stop-and-guide member 30; as shown punches 17, in two rows, are each provided with an actuator. The interposer 39 is connected to a member 40 secured to a housing 45 which is actuated by the eccentric 47. The member 40 is attached to a bail plate 35 to which is pivoted a link 49 adapted to be engaged by a push-rod 52a connected to the armature 52 of the electromagnet 52, 53; the push-rod may be of plastics material and is formed with a flexible portion 52b in order to permit the oscillating motion of the armature to be converted to reciprocating motion of the push-rod. In operation a card 10, Fig. 1, is incrementally fed by rollers 11, 12, 13, 14 over a die 19 and upon energization of the electromagnet the interposer 39 is brought into alignment with the punch so that when the eccentric rotates, a hole is punched in the card. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the interposer is formed with a crook-shaped cam 41 for receiving a member 61 secured to the armature 52 of the electromagnet 50. The armature is normally held in a raised position by a holding coil 70 so that the member 61 abuts the lower end of the punch 17 thereby preventing its engagement by the end of the interposer. When a second release coil 53 is energized the armature drops so that member 61 is moved away from the end of the punch so allowing it to be engaged by the interposer (Fig. 5a, not shown). In further modifications (Figs. 7 and 8), the holding coil 70 is dispensed with and the punch may be inverted relative to the magnet.
