Abstract
1,040,099. Selective punching machines. ELECTRONIC ASSISTANCE CORPORATION. Dec. 29, 1964 [Jan. 3, 1964], No. 52685/64. Heading B4B. A punching machine for perforating a card or tape 36 for use in retail sales operation or in parimutual betting systems comprises a carrier 22 in which punch pins 24 to 29 are slidable, a die plate 18 having openings for the punch pins, interposer bars 46 to 51, Fig. 3, selectively operable to block the upward movement of the punch pins, a cam 68 mounted on a crank-shaft 60 driven by a motor 62, for moving the carrier 22 towards and away from the die plate 18, and means for stopping the motor 62 after the shaft 60 has made one revolution, the interposer bars being connected to flexible cables 53, Fig. 3, which are selectively operable to move the interposer bars to the unblocking position against the action of springs 54, and the means for operating different groups of the cables being manually-operable push-buttons, solenoids or cams and cam followers. When the card 36 is positioned correctly, it closes a switch 100, Figs. 2 and 4, and when a push-button switch 108, Fig. 4, is closed, a switch 110 is closed to form a first circuit to a power source 106. A relay 120 is thus energized to complete a circuit from a power source 124 to the motor 62 through relay armature 125. The motor then rotates the shaft 60 and cam 68 driving the carrier 22 downwardly. The blocked punch pins 24 to 29 and a cancelling punch 33 contact and perforate the card. A cam 112 mounted on the shaft 60 is likewise driven by the motor and after about 5 to 10 degrees of rotation lifts cam follower 114<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 4, thus closing switch 114. A second circuit from the power source 106 is thereby completed. Switch 108 now opens. Also, at the time the other perforations are being made, the portion of the card 36 contacting the switch 100 is removed by the punch member 78, Fig. 4, thereby causing the switch 100 to open. As the shaft 60 continues to rotate, the carrier 22 is returned to its uppermost position. When the cam has rotated through about 355 degrees, the follower 114<SP>1</SP> drops its detent 112<SP>1</SP>, thereby opening the switch 114 and breaking the circuit to the relay 120 and hence to the motor 62.
