In a device for locking the punches in operative positions in tape or card punching units provided with a crank, eccentric or cam drive, a rotatable cam 1 is interposed between an axially-displaceable punch 3 and a fixed member 14. The cam in one of its positions, Fig. 1, i.e. with its largest diameter locks the punch and in the other of its positions, Fig. 3, i.e. with its smallest diameter allows a relative axial movement of the punch. Punching is caused by raising a die 5 relative to the punch 3 by means of a rotatable eccentric 7. The tape 4 is stripped from the punch by means of a hold-down member 15. The cam 1 is mounted on a shaft 2 which is rigidly connected to an armature 21, Fig. 5, mounted in a yoke 20 of an electromagnet. When the coil 24 is energized, the armature is rotated and rotates the cam through a predetermined angle and locks the punch. The magnets to operate a row of punches across the tape are arranged in two groups staggered relative to one another and with one upstream and the other downstream of the row, Fig. 7 (not shown). Alternatively, the cam may be rotated by mechanical means. A punched-out portion (16), Fig. 2 (not shown), is pressed by the punch into a die opening 6.
